Tayob was originally a civil trained lawyer, but his practice took a different turn in the mid 80’s to 90’s. In 1994, he was involved in prominent human rights matters, including the Delmas Treason Trial and the Bophuthatswana Coup trials. In the first few years post-1994, Tayob was a consultant to the Telecommunications Department in the North-West Province. Tayob, along with the late Judge Essop Patel, was responsible for drafting the original legislation for the North West Broadcasting Services. Over the years, Tayob has gained vast experience in commercial litigation and has been involved in major cases in the fields of contract disputes, income tax law, leases, tender irregularities and constitutional law. Tayob has also sat on the bench of the Labour Court as Acting Judge.
Tayob was involved in the major constitutional challenge against the Reserve Bank Exchange Control Regulation involving R1.5billion, as well as a matter falling under the Inter-Governmental Dispute Resolution Regulations, wherein he had to represent one government department in a claim of over R2.4billion.
